Toyota service intervals are some of the longest in the industry - the brand designs for long service life with minimal owner intervention. But "long" doesn't mean "skip." Engine-out repairs are more likely when the maintenance schedule is ignored.
Toyota 0W-20 full-synthetic on most current engines (Genuine Toyota Motor Oil or equivalent). Toyota specifies 10,000-mile oil change intervals on most current cars under their factory schedule. We recommend 7,500 miles for high-mileage longevity, and 5,000 miles on the 8AR-FTS turbo engine (RAV4, NX200t) given turbo bearing loads. The 2AR-FE 2.5L (2007-2011 Camry and RAV4) had a well-documented oil consumption issue - owners of those generations need to check oil level monthly.
100,000 miles on iridium plugs for most current Toyotas. The 2GR-FE V6 uses 6 plugs and requires intake manifold removal for the rear bank at the 100K interval.
Toyota automatic transmissions use fluid selected for the exact unit. A fluid service may be recommended based on mileage, service history, fluid condition, and symptoms. A shifting concern is diagnosed before fluid service or repair is proposed.
Toyota Super Long Life Coolant (pink, OAT-type) factory-filled at first owner, designed for 100,000-mile initial interval, then 50,000-mile intervals after that. Generic green coolant corrodes the cooling system over time - always use Toyota Pink (or equivalent OAT) on Toyotas.
Most current Toyota engines use timing chains (no replacement interval). The older 1MZ-FE V6 (1995-2006 Camry, Avalon, Sienna) and older 3.0L 1MZ engines used timing belts requiring replacement at 90,000 miles. All current 4-cylinder and V6 engines (2AR-FE, 2GR-FE, A25A-FKS, 2GR-FKS, V35A) use chains.
87 octane regular is fine on most Toyotas. The Tundra/Sequoia V35A 3.4L twin-turbo and older 5.7L 3UR-FE both run 87 fine but Toyota recommends 91+ for heavy loads to prevent knock. The Supra (shared with BMW Z4) requires 91+ premium.
Toyota repairs cluster around well-documented engine-family patterns. Most "expensive Toyota repairs" are oil consumption issues on the 2AR-FE generation or water pump failures on the 2GR-FE V6.
Toyota vehicles can run so reliably that owners sometimes postpone scheduled service, which can lead to stacked repair needs. Consistent maintenance can reduce that risk. The correct schedule depends on the model, mileage, history, and use.
It is a documented pattern, not something you caused: the 2AR-FE 2.5L in 2007-2011 Camry and RAV4 can burn oil because of its piston ring design. Check the dipstick monthly and top up as needed, since running low is what actually damages the engine. Toyota ran an extended warranty program for this, so ask us to check whether yours is covered.

Toyota WS fluid is labeled fill for life, but heat and stop-and-go miles still age it, and worn fluid shows up as delayed or slightly harsh shifts. A fluid service between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, including on the common U660E six speed, meaningfully extends transmission life. There is no urgency if shifting feels normal, but waiting for symptoms means waiting too long.
The iridium plugs last 100,000 miles either way, but on the 2GR-FE V6 the rear bank sits under the intake manifold, which has to come off to reach those plugs. The intake manifold must be removed to reach the rear spark plugs, so the service is more involved than a basic spark-plug change. If you notice misfires or a rough idle before 100,000 miles, the plugs are worth inspecting early.
