When to stop and call
If you see smoke, smell burning wire or plastic, notice a hot or damaged cable, or the vehicle suddenly loses electrical power while you drive, stop in a safe place and turn it off. Do not touch damaged wiring or keep driving to see if the problem clears.

What the symptom does not prove
A dead battery does not automatically mean the battery is bad. A no-crank start can come from the battery, starter circuit, a poor connection, a control problem, or another condition. Flickering lights, a warning, or an accessory failure can involve the power supply, wiring, a sensor, or communication between systems.

How we isolate the fault
We start with what changed, when it happens, and what still works. Depending on the concern, we may check power and return paths, wiring and connections, sensor behavior, charging or starting operation, battery use while the vehicle is off, or communication between vehicle systems.
The checks are selected for the symptom; not every electrical problem follows the same procedure. Testing helps separate a failed part from a wiring, connection, control, or communication problem. If the concern remains broad across the vehicle, Car Diagnostics may be the better starting point.
Repair and setup after the cause is found
Once the cause is supported, the repair may involve wiring or connection repair, a sensor or circuit, starter or alternator replacement, battery-drain repair, or another electrical part. If the starter or alternator is confirmed as the failed part, we replace it; this page does not promise rebuilding.
After a battery replacement, we can register the new battery with the vehicle when that vehicle requires it. This helps the vehicle recognize the replacement; it is separate from finding why the old battery went dead.
