Engine Repair

Engine problems can show up as shaking or rough running, a new noise, smoke, overheating, oil or coolant loss, or a sudden loss of power. These signs can have different causes, so the first useful step is inspecting and testing the engine before choosing a repair.

We consider the engine's condition, its history, and the test results together. We explain whether the evidence supports a specific repair, a gasoline-engine rebuild, or engine replacement. If more than one sound option makes sense, we start with the one that costs less.

When to stop and call

If the red oil-pressure warning is on, the engine is knocking severely, the vehicle suddenly loses a large amount of oil or coolant, produces heavy smoke, overheats, or loses power suddenly, stop in a safe place and turn off the engine. Do not keep driving to see if the problem clears.

Call the shop and describe what happened before trying to drive farther.Leave the engine off and request an appointment online. Tell us what happened so we can follow up during business hours.

What we check first

The first checks depend on what the engine is doing and what happened before the change. We may trace a leak, review the warning that appeared, check how the engine runs, and test whether the cooling, fuel, ignition, timing, or internal engine systems are involved.

A warning, smoke, overheating, power loss, noise, or fluid loss is a starting clue. It does not prove by itself that the engine needs a major repair.

What the findings may mean

The result may be no repair yet, more testing, a repair to one part or system, a gasoline-engine rebuild, or replacement. A major engine decision should follow evidence about the engine's condition, not the symptom alone.

When internal damage is confirmed, we explain why repair, rebuilding, or replacement fits the vehicle. The detailed rebuild-versus-replacement decision belongs to our Engine & Transmission Rebuilding page.

Tell us what changed

Tell us when the problem began, what warning you saw, whether the vehicle lost oil or coolant, and whether there was smoke, severe noise, overheating, shaking, stalling, or a power change. Any service or repair history you have can also help us choose the first checks.

Repair begins after you approve it

Testing comes before the recommendation. Luis explains what the findings support and provides a written estimate. Repair work begins only after you approve the recommended path.
